In a detailed study of transition services available for students with disabilities, the GAO found that there multiple federal programs available from several federal government agencies including the U.S. Departments of Education, Labor Health and Human Services, and the Social Security Administration, however, there was little effort to coordinate the provision of transition services amongst these agencies. The lack of any coordinated response by these federal government agencies contributed to the difficulty that students with disabilities encounter to obtain funding, vocational training, tutoring, or assistive technology to promote their successful transition from high school to post high school activities including employment and post-secondary education. GAO recommended that the various federal agencies develop common goals for transition services, a coordinated response, and increasing the awareness of the services that are available for transition services.
